The functioning of the central and peripheral nervous system depends on the supply of appropriate nutrients, especially important among them B vitamins, namely vitamin B12. «Neurotropic» effect of vitamin B12 plays a special role in the central and peripheral nervous system. Cobalamin is essential for the synthesis of DNA in myelin-producing oligodendrocytes and the synthesis of myelin itself. Cobalamin deficiency leads not only to impaired haematopoiesis and DNA synthesis, but is also accompanied by a decrease in S-adenosylmethionine, trophic neuronal factors, and an increase in methylmalonic acid and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Methylcobalamin, biologically active isoform of vitamin B12 , has proven to be effective in treatment of peripheral neuropathy of various genesis, especially postherpetic neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy.
