Treatment in patients with chronic neuropathic pain in general practice

Neuropathic pain is a condition, which is caused by damage of nervous tissue, peripheral or central. Most cases of neuropathic pain are chronic and presented during months and years. This condition accompanies by significant lowering of patients` quality of life and severe limitations in social, occupational and/or other important areas of functioning. There are a variety of different types of neuropathic pain, including post-stroke pain, postherpetic neuralgia, fibromialgia, painful diabetic neuropathy and many other. Medicines that are effective against nociceptive pain, which arises from tissue damage (after a fall or in case of arthritic), are not helping in reducing of neuropathic pain. The most common used medications for this condition and current state of evidence in this field were described in this review.
