Резюме. Unconscious patients are one of the most common and challenging groups for emergency medicine and intensive care specialists. Coma — a state of complete unresponsiveness to external and internal stimuli — affects approximately ⅓ of patients admitted to general intensive care units worldwide, and is an important predictor of mortality and outcome for various neurological disorders. Considering that a comatose state is closely related to vital organs failure, all cases of unconsciousness should be regarded as potentially life-threatening emergencies. This article describes the major diagnostic and management principles which are the mainstay for successful acute management of comatose patients.
